Doc Rivers is out in Philadelphia after three seasons, all of which ended in second round exits. This seasons defeat was especially disappointing after a blowout loss in Game 7 against the Celtics. Although it’s an accomplishment in its own right to make it to the second round of the playoffs, the 76ers management have shown that it’s not an acceptable level of success especially given that the 76ers last coach was fired for much of the same reason.
The question now that Rivers is out is of course who will replace him as head coach. It’s totally fine that the teams higher ups aren’t going to settle for second round exits and have championship expectations. However, the problem is whether or not someone available that will be a better leader for the team than Rivers was.
As far as reported candidates for his replacement there are six that I’ve heard about those are: Mike Budenholzer, Sam Cassell, Mike D’Antoni, Nick Nurse, Frank Vogel and Monty Williams. That list obviously includes some recent championship winning coaches and James Harden’s former coach from Houston Mike D’Antoni is an interesting option as well especially if Harden decides to return next season. All in all I just hope that the decision to switch coaches creates a positive result for the Sixers.
