Phillies Lose Opening Day Game

The Philadelphia Phillies faced the Texas Rangers in their first game of the new season, but unfortunately were defeated 11-7. The game started off great with Alec Bohm scoring a two run home run to start the game off 2-0 in the second inning. The Phillies would go on to extend their lead to 5-0 at the top of the fourth. However, the bottom of the fourth is where everything went wrong for the Phillies. The Phillies would give up 9 runs in the fourth inning, and although the Phillies would battle back they couldn’t close the gap eventually losing 11-7.

Although the results were unfavorable there were some positive points as well. Alec Bohm went 3/4 and had 3 RBIs to add to his aforementioned home run, and JT Realmuto went 3/5. The problem with the Phillies hitting in this game other than half the lineup only getting one hit ( or no hits) in four or five at bats, that other than Bohm there didn’t seem to be an abundance of players converting their hits into runs. Realmuto, Castellanos, and Marsh are the only players other than Bohm to collect multiple hits, getting 7 collectively, but between them generating only one RBI. Now obviously RBIs aren’t everything and there can be various circumstances that would explain why they didn’t get more, but still there seemed to be missed opportunities for the Phillies on offense. The biggest problem in the game was obviously a dismal defensive performance in the fourth inning where they gave up 9 runs, especially disappointing was the performance of star pitcher Aaron Nola. He had a perfectly fine game for three innings until he gave up 4 hits and 5 earned runs in the fourth which lead to him being pulled from the game.

While the game had its ups and downs, and Phillies fans aren’t thrilled by the result, nobody should be too worried about it. It’s only the first game of a 162 game season, so chances are it won’t have any real bearing on the season overall. As perspective, the 2008 Phillies also started out 0-1, and in case you don’t recall that was the last time the Phillies won the World Series. I’m just saying, it’s something to think about. 🤷‍♀️
