Philadelphia Flyers Head Coach John Tortorella sent a letter to Flyers season ticket holders yesterday in which he said that he was pleased by the team’s efforts, but there’s still work for the organization to do. “I’m not going to lie to you— and I want to be clear about this — we’re not there yet,” is what he said in his letter. He would go in to say that this year was only the first step in building the future of the organization.
This comes after Philadelphia has started to seem to turn things around after having an abysmal start to the year that included a double digit losing streak. The Flyers are currently in 7th place in the division but are only six points out of the Wild Card spot. While it may seem that the Flyers are pulling the plug on the season a bit too soon, I think that this is something that Flyers fans were expecting. Although we have had some success it’s pretty clear that we can’t consistently compete with the higher level teams in the NHL, making any playoff hopes unreasonable. While a rebuilding year is never what a fan wants to see we can only hope that Tortorella can build the Flyers up to a Championship contender in the next few years.
With this new outlook on the season, the Flyers are apparently already shopping several of their players ahead of the trade deadline next month. It will be interesting to see what players get moved and how the team will look going forward. Here’s hoping Torts turns the ship around soon🍻
