This week it was announced that Jake Paul has signed a contract with the Professional Fighters League. Paul has made the move from social media star to professional boxer and has amassed a 6-0 record with 4 knockouts. The details of the deal are undisclosed, but it is supposedly a multi fight/year contract.
Paul has said that his move to MMA is to prove himself and make a positive impact in the sport. He is also expected to continue his boxing career in addition to starting a career in MMA. One theory I have as for why Paul has signed a MMA deal, is because high profile boxers (and most boxers in general) don’t want to fight him. It makes sense given the fact that even though Paul has proven his skills in the ring, many people within the boxing community still see him only as a “YouTuber” and don’t see any benefits to fighting him. On the other hand, for Paul it’s not going to further his fighting career to keep boxing retired MMA fighters, so moving over to an MMA organization is actually a pretty reasonable plan.
Jake Paul has not announced an exact date for when he will fight, and no opponents have been confirmed for him to fight yet. However, the top name that’s been brought up for Jake’s first MMA opponent is of course, Nate Diaz. In fact, I’ve heard that there has been talks of Diaz and Paul facing each other in both boxing and MMA. Another name that has been mentioned is retired UFC fighter Donald Cerone, but still all of this is just speculation at the moment. Regardless of who Jake ends up fighting, I think that we will all be interested to see how it plays out.
