Last weekend I had a conversation with UFC commentator Joe Rogan and one thing we discussed off air was a underground fighting organization that was recently discovered in Japan. This organization is called the Kengan Association and the fights they put on are known as Kengan matches. So the question is, what are the Kengan matches anyway?
The Kengan matches are apparently fights that take place between wealthy business owners who hire fighters to fight in unarmed combat where the winner takes all. It is said that these fights have been used to decide business deals between wealthy business men since the Edo period of Japan and still takes place to this day, now with fighters and businesses from outside of Japan taking part. All fights in the Kengan matches are no holds barred and basically anything goes as there are little to no rules in these matches. As one would expect with so little limitations many of these fights end with one or both fighters critically injured and in some cases the fights are said to go to the death.
The Kengan matches have remained a secret for so long due to the wealth and influence of the people who run it. However, though the source is unknown information about this underground organization has come to light, and after years of research and documentation an exposé was recently released on this topic bu Netflix. I highly recommend checking it out, the documentary is called Kengan Ashura.
