Alex Pereira just announced who his first opponent will be after winning the UFC Middleweight Title and it’s admittedly a bit of a head scratcher. His opponent according to himself will be none other than Welterweight top contender Khamzat Chimiev. Although it’s not his choice of opponent that is the perplexing part, it’s the choice of weight class.
A Middleweight title fight between Khamzat and Pereira seems pretty reasonable especially since Khamzat seems to struggle to make 170, so when the match up was reported it didn’t sound crazy. However, that’s not what was reported this fight is supposedly being held at Light Heavyweight. This doesn’t make sense for anyone other than Pereira who is a pretty big 185er, and while Khamzat is a big Welterweight it doesn’t make any sense that he would move up two weight classes to fight Pereira in a non title fight.
Now for full disclosure this match up has not been officially announced by the UFC, it’s only been mentioned by Alex himself. In addition to that, I also haven’t seen everything that he said about that fight taking place. That being said, if this fight does take place it will only serve to throw another monkey wrench into the Middleweight division. If this fight does take place I think Khamzat would have a huge advantage on the ground that would give Alex a lot of problems.
